Nicht or kein? German negation for beginners

In Ich spiele nicht, nicht makes the action negative. Say what isn't true with a clear, small contrast.

What you will learn

  • Say that an action is not happening or that you do not enjoy it.
  • Say that something is not a book, lamp or another familiar object.

Say that something is not happening

Quick summary

In Ich spiele nicht, nicht makes the action negative.

Why it matters

You can deny a simple action without changing the verb ending.

Build the pattern

Ich spiele nicht.I am not playing.

In Ich spiele nicht, nicht makes the action negative.

How it works

Ich spiele means “I play” or “I am playing”. Add nicht to say “I am not playing”: Ich spiele nicht. The ending still matches the subject.

Use gern after an action to say you enjoy it: Ich spiele gern means “I like playing”. Put nicht before gern for the opposite: Ich spiele nicht gern.

The two negatives do not say the same thing. “I am not playing” describes what is happening; “I do not like playing” describes a preference.

Examples

Ich spiele nicht.I am not playing.
Ich spiele gern.I like playing.
Ich spiele nicht gern.I do not like playing.

Common mistakes

  • Ich nicht spiele.Ich spiele nicht.

Keep the changed verb in the second slot.

Limits & exceptions

  • Do not assume that nicht always goes last. Here it follows the bare action, but comes before gern when the preference is negative.
A little deeper

Negation has a scope: it tells you which claim is being denied. Read the whole sentence before deciding what “not” changes.

Use a negative article with a noun

Quick summary

Compare Das ist ein Buch. with Das ist kein Buch.

Why it matters

A negative article lets you say that something is not a member of a category.

Build the pattern

Das ist kein Buch. This is not a book.

Compare Das ist ein Buch. with Das ist kein Buch.

How it works

Use the supported frame Das ist … (“This is …”). With the familiar nouns, replace ein with kein and eine with keine: Das ist kein Tisch, Das ist kein Buch, Das ist keine Lampe.

For several things, use Das sind … (“These are …”). Das sind keine Bücher means “These are not books.” Plural keine does not depend on the singular gender.

In this block, learn Das ist and Das sind as ready-made frames. The full pattern of the verb “to be” comes later.

Examples

Das ist kein Buch. This is not a book.
Das ist keine Lampe. This is not a lamp.
Das sind keine Bücher. These are not books.

Common mistakes

  • Das ist keine Buch.Das ist kein Buch.

The basic singular noun phrase is ein Buch, so the negative is kein Buch.

Limits & exceptions

  • These noun phrases are nominative after ist or sind. Do not transfer every form directly to objects of other verbs; their cases come later.
A little deeper

Kein is not a verb ending. It is an article-like word that changes to fit the noun phrase. This is why one fixed form cannot fit every noun.

Choose what you want to deny

Quick summary

Use nicht gern for “do not like”, and kein/keine in the noun frames here.

Why it matters

Choosing the negative depends on the message, not just the English word “not”.

Build the pattern

Ich arbeite nicht gern.I do not like working.

Use nicht gern for “do not like”, and kein/keine in the noun frames here.

How it works

If you mean “I do not like working”, use Ich arbeite nicht gern. If you mean “This is not a table”, use Das ist kein Tisch. The first changes a preference; the second rejects a noun category.

Keep the meaning precise. Ich arbeite nicht. does not mean that you dislike working; it says you are not working in the relevant situation.

nicht can also deny a particular detail. For now, practise the clear contrasts in this block rather than trying to place it in every possible sentence.

Examples

Ich arbeite nicht gern.I do not like working.
Ich arbeite nicht.I am not working.
Das ist kein Tisch. This is not a table.

Common mistakes

  • Ich spiele kein gern.Ich spiele nicht gern.

Use nicht before gern; this is not a noun phrase.

Limits & exceptions

  • Do not treat “kein for nouns, nicht for everything else” as a complete rule. Definite noun phrases and contrastive corrections need a fuller explanation later.
A little deeper

A contrast such as “not one, but two” can use other wording. The beginner exercises ask for a neutral denial, not a correction of the number one.
